Risky Interactions: What’s OK to Take with mushrooms, and What’s Not

Posted by

Non-psilocybin psychedelic mushrooms work in much the same way their original counterparts do. They aim to release serotonin in the brain and strengthen weak areas of communication to change how the user thinks and feels, leading to greater originality and better performance.

It’s best to take psychedelic mushrooms by themselves, but it’s not always possible. People eat, drink, and sometimes, take other substances. Some things can interact negatively with them. If a user is not aware, they could be in for unexpected results that defeat their purpose.

Before you explore mushrooms, know how certain things can go well with them and what doesn’t. Here is a guide on which substances have risky interactions, and why.

A Common Morning Drink: Coffee

For coffee drinkers, the beverage serves as a way to wake them up in the morning. It boosts energy, focus, motivation, and mood.

On the other hand, it can increase anxiety. When it wears off, it leads to a crash of energy and concentration. The midday slump around lunchtime is even worse without a refill.

The main neurotransmitters, or chemical messengers, that coffee (and other caffeinated drinks) boost are serotonin and dopamine. Serotonin is useful for positive mood and emotional stability, but it also influences sleep and speeds up digestion. Coffee speeds up bowel movements and suppresses appetite, leading to a lack of hunger or feeling full sooner.

Dopamine is also important for emotions, like serotonin, but in a different way. It influences motivation and pleasure in the reward system and reinforces behaviors.

With microdosing, if you also drink coffee, you may end up with higher-than-normal levels of serotonin. That would defeat the purpose of microdosing and make you feel as if you drank too much coffee.

What this means: Keep coffee or other highly-caffeinated drinks to a minimum. One cup of coffee is okay. Also, do not consume coffee with psychedelic mushrooms, but wait an hour after microdosing.

Other Caffeinated Drinks

Energy drinks tend to have even higher levels of caffeine than even dark roast coffee, which has the highest levels of caffeine in comparison to medium and light roasts.

Tea has lower levels of caffeine than coffee. It’s possible to drink tea regularly and frequently without experiencing side effects of anxiety while microdosing psychedelic mushrooms

What this means: Stay away from energy drinks. Tea in normal amounts is okay.

What About Food?

When microdosing with psychedelic mushrooms, you can prepare with or without food. However, it’s best to do so after eating, because taking it on an empty stomach can upset it.

Then there’s the question of what kind of food you should eat while microdosing. Eating food helps you digest the mushrooms more gradually.

Types of foods that go well with psychedelic mushrooms: Fruits, nuts, leafy greens, and animal and other natural fats. These are healthy and easy to digest.

What this means: Do not combine psychedelic mushrooms with food. Instead, eat first, then take the mushrooms for at least an hour after eating.

Interactions with Medications

It’s always best to consult your doctor if you are taking prescription medications and want to microdose psychedelic mushrooms. That’s because of the risk of cross-interactions and unpredictable, even dangerous, side effects.

Serotonin syndrome is a major risk with psychiatric medications for anxiety and depression as well as opioid painkillers. It’s a condition where the user has too much serotonin and it speeds up everything by over-exciting the areas of the brain under its influence.

What this means: Never take psychedelic mushrooms at any dosage (even microdoses) with psychiatric medications. For everything else, consult your doctor.

Interactions with Other Substances

Alcohol, marijuana, kratom, and 7-OH  are other substances that people who microdose may also partake in. Kratom and 7-OH are both opioids, with 7-OH being more potent. However, both of them carry the same risk of serotonin syndrome as with prescription painkillers and psychiatric medications.

Alcohol is a depressant. With microdosing psychedelic mushrooms, it can increase negative emotions and make the user sleepy.

Marijuana is a mind-altering substance but can have sedating effects depending on the strain, especially indica. When taken with psychedelic mushrooms, it can interfere with the authentic results of the experience and make the user drowsy.

What this means: Do not microdose with alcohol. Be careful when using marijuana.

Mindless Mushrooms’ Friendly Formula

Psychedelic mushrooms can interact with different foods and drinks, even at microdose levels. It’s best to eat food before microdosing and to consume caffeine in small amounts, but never with mushrooms. Users should avoid other substances because of unpredictable effects that ruin the experience and dangerous cross-interactions that can threaten one’s health.

For the most potent and consistent effects, choose Mindless Mushrooms. The chewable tablets absorb gradually to subtly improve your mood, mental clarity, and motivation. You can get the efficient results you seek every time with each quarter- or half-tablet.
