How to Microdose Mushrooms Safely: What to Know

Posted by

Microdosing can be a low-risk way to integrate nootropics into your wellness regimen, or to experiment with ways to elevate your creativity. However, “low risk” is not “no risk” – and in the vast sea of moral panic and judgment out there, it can be hard to separate the scare tactics from the actual facts. Ergo, we’ve put together this guide to safe microdosing–and while aimed at beginners, users at any level of the game should be tuning in. Thousands of people across the country microdose daily without incident because they follow evidence-based safety practices–so believe us when we say this isn’t the place to gamble.

Now, real quick: remember that pure psilocybin/psilocin is still Schedule I federally–and we’re not talking about those kinds of mushrooms here–this is about microdosing. Legal mushroom-blend nootropic products like Mindless Mushrooms contain no controlled substances–hence why they are legal! However, as a general rule, Do NOT fly internationally with any mushroom product unless you’ve triple-checked destination laws.

1. Product Source & Lab Testing – Non-Negotiable

Okay, we aren’t judging you for trying things out once upon a time in college–but as a rule now, you should never ever put a mushroom product in your body unless a recent third-party Certificate of Analysis (COA) exists for that exact batch.

Mindless Mushrooms (offered by the kratom OG’s at Real Botanicals), as well as every other legitimate player publish their COAs showing:

  • Exact potency (5 mg claimed = 4.8–5.2 mg real)
  • Zero heavy metals (lead, arsenic, cadmium, mercury)
  • Zero microbial contamination (mold, yeast, E. coli, salmonella)
  • Zero synthetic tryptamines if they claim “mushroom blend only”

If the seller hides batch numbers or “tests internally” that’s a huge red flag–run!

2. Always Start Low & Go Slow

Before we go into dosage, let us just say that microdoses are still doses–and that applies to the smaller end of dosage levels that are the most beginner-friendly. You are never doing microdosing to chase a psychedelic trip or high–so there’s literally no need to “go big.” If you are a total newbie, your first dose ever should be 1–2 mg max (which is a ¼ to ½ of a Mindless Mushroom tablet).

From there, wait for a minimum 90 minutes. Feel nothing? That’s okay–that’s actually normal. Do NOT immediately take more. Wait 2-3 days and take your second dose, and increase it only by 1 mg.

For your third dose (also 2–3 days later): increase by 1 mg only.

Most people settle between 2–4 mg for a “sweet spot” with microdosing. Anyone taking higher amounts (like 8–15 mg) is not microdosing (and they are full of it if they claim to be). Be aware that higher dosages are beyond the bounds of microdosing safety data, so if you cross this threshold, there’s a chance you will experience psychedelic effects and possibly increased risk.

3. Never Dose Two Days in a Row

In case you missed it where we said “wait 2-3 days” we want to hammer this point in. Consecutive dosing is the #1 cause of tolerance, mood swings, and subtle anxiety creep–and icky experiences that give microdosing a bad rep.

Every evidence-based protocol out there (Fadiman, Stamets, etc.) builds in 48–72 hour breaks for a reason–namely, serotonin receptor recovery and integration. Listen and obey this, and you will not only reduce your risks, but actually be able to see what effects the dosages have on you so you can effectively tailor your on-going experience.

4. Microdosing Contraindications – Pay Attention…

Again, we aren’t trying to scare you, but it’s just common sense: not everything is for everyone at all times. Microdosing is no exception to this, so please put safety first and ask a psychedelic-informed healthcare provider if in doubt.

DO NOT Microdose If You Have:

  • A personal or close-family history of schizophrenia, bipolar I, or psychotic disorders
  • You currently use of lithium or tramadol
  • You have severe cardiovascular issues (uncontrolled hypertension, recent heart attack)
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding

Known Medication Interactions – Proceed with Caution

  • If you take SSRIs, SNRIs, bupropion, lamotrigine, the effects may be reduced; and again, if you already have certain psychiatric conditions as described above, then mushrooms are not for you, period.
  • Avoid microdosing if you are taking: MAOIs, tricyclic antidepressants, or dextromethorphan
  • Be advised that data exists yet on GLP-1 agonists (Ozempic/Wegovy), but as these slow gastric emptying, we say err on the side of waiting.

STOP microdosing immediately if you notice:

  • Increased anxiety or irritability on dose days
  • Any emotional numbness or “flat” mood
  • Any sleep disruption
  • Any heart palpitations or vasoconstriction (cold fingers/toes)
  • A creeping desire to keep increasing the dose

A 2–4 week reset usually reverses tolerance and side effects completely, and from there you can reassess.

Your Quick-Reference Microdosing Safety Checklist

✅You have no personal or family history of psychosis, nor are your taking any medications or experiencing health issues that are contraindicated.

✅ You’re experiencing normal sleep and mood regulation before dosing.

✅ You pick a lab-tested product with public COA.

✅ You start at ≤2 mg, and never dose two days in a row.

✅ You keep track of what you take in a journal and track your integration day.

✅ You have at least one emergency contact aware of what you’re taking.
