Getting Into Flow with Mushrooms

Posted by

Microdosing psychedelic mushrooms can definitely change how you think and hence, how you act. When people talk about the benefits of microdosing, they often focus on things like productivity, creativity, thinking outside the box, and thinking on their feet.

There isn’t much focus on how microdosing can help users get into a better “flow” of things. The ability to move from one task to another smoothly and easily while maintaining focus is difficult in a world of technology and constant distractions.

If your issue is not so much that you’re not productive but you don’t have enough flow, psychedelic mushrooms can help. This is a look at how microdosing encourages users to have better flow as they go about their day.

Productivity vs. Flow

There’s plenty of talk about many people’s desire to be more productive and how to get more things done, or do them better. Few people talk about what it means to have better flow.

To do that, we first need to define what “flow” means. It is a state of being “in the zone” where someone is fully absorbed in the task they’re doing. Creativity flows endlessly as their mind and body are totally immersed in the activity to perform effortlessly, and they may even lose track of time while they ignore all external distractions.

Flow is an ideal state to achieve where someone has heightened attention and complete concentration that leads to a distortion in their sense of time. It’s more than just productivity – it’s the peak of it. Getting more things done can be even better by doing them more efficiently.

What Makes Good Flow?

Understanding flow is more than just being productive. It’s key to a richer, more fulfilling life. A flow state is accessible to anyone if they know how to get into it.

Have you ever been doing something and lost track of time? The work, effort, and ideas come endlessly and you feel a surge of accomplishment along with a rush of energy. Total engagement leads to a deep sense of satisfaction. That’s what’s important for a better quality of life.

Flow has the following qualities:

  • Total focus
  • Merging of awareness and action
  • Loss of self-consciousness (performance anxiety)
  • Distortion of the sense of time
  • Intrinsic (self-rewarding) motivation
  • Clear goals with immediate self-reporting feedback
  • Challenge and skill are in balance

The Neurochemistry of a Flow State

Certain chemical messengers release in the brain when you achieve flow:

  • Serotonin has the most indirect role in flow. It’s the feeling of peace and tranquility after experiencing a flow state, but it also indirectly triggers the release of GABA and dopamine; the former inhibits the stress response and the latter is the feel-good, reward, or happiness chemical.
  • Dopamine comes when we do something that gives us pleasure. It’s also involved whenever we have novel experiences – making us feel good so we seek them out. It also enhances things like pattern information, the ability to process information (including emotional), and attention span.
  • Norepinephrine (noradrenaline) is a physical performance enhancer. It’s kind of like dopamine in feeling, but gives us energy. It also aids in focus, or rather, turning energy into concentration. With dopamine, norepinephrine produces a heightened sense of awareness that enhances sensory perception with less effort. Everything becomes more vivid and while you concentrate, you feel it’s rewarding.
  • Endorphins modulate feelings of stress and pain. They’re pleasurable, and intensely so – such as when athletes don’t feel hurt or notice when they experience injury and keep playing.
  • Anandamide is an endocannabinoid. Marijuana users know this as the neurotransmitter from the brain’s cannabinoid system, and it’s the same as in the “runner’s high.” With similar effects to marijuana, anandamide increases the feeling of pleasure, pattern-recognition ability, and inhibits fear. It allows people to try new things or do something they would normally be afraid of, but don’t want to let that stop them.

It’s too simplistic to say these are all feel-good chemicals. They definitely make you feel really good while being faster and stronger mentally and even physically. But they have subtle differences that work together to alter someone’s state of consciousness into what we know as flow or a flow state.

How Does Microdosing Work?

Microdosing refers to the practice of taking small amounts of a psychedelic substance, like mushrooms. In the modern-day United States, the usual suspects are largely illegal, so people resort to non-psilocybin psychedelic mushroom alternatives that are legal but can recreate certain mental states of the microdosing experience.

Although there are different scheduling protocols, one of the most common is the Fadiman method. The user is “on” for 1 day where they microdose, then “off” for 2 days where they rest. The logic behind this is that the effects of psychedelic mushrooms wear off within a day, but the benefits of the refreshed state of mind linger.

Microdosing for Inducing Flow States

There are several ways people can induce a flow state on their own, but it can differ for everyone, and it’s a process of discovery. It’s the reason why some people like to listen to music to get into the zone.

Sometimes, you just don’t know how to trigger it, and need a little help to get started.  That’s where microdosing psychedelic mushrooms can come in.

Does Microdosing Really Help Induce Flow?

Flow states are extremely addictive. Fortunately, they’re not just for athletes. Microdosing helps the brain release all of the aforementioned neurotransmitters except for anandamine. It focuses directly on serotonin 5HT2A, and that indirectly triggers dopamine, norepinephrine, and endorphins.

That’s a total of 4 out of the 5 chemical messengers we need to get into flow. Things like cold exposure or drinking coffee triggers the release of anandamide. However, when you get into flow through conscious effort, then anandamide comes naturally.

Microdosing can help some people achieve flow states faster. The ability to perform at one’s best with as little effort as possible is a goal for people who want not only to do more, but to do it as efficiently as possible.

If you want a legal psychedelic that’s similar to psilocybin, look for a psychedelic mushroom product that activates serotonin 5HT2A receptors –  the same ones necessary for learning new skills, recovering from injury, trauma, or illness, and respond to new experiences. In turn, it helps induce flow with greater emotional arousal and heightened awareness.
